Sitting in Discomfort

I’d like to share some thoughts I’ve been having lately. The past few months have been ones of incredibly growth for me. I have been intently focused on some pretty important internal changes and the confrontation of some of my more glaring weaknesses. This has been painful, challenging work, but incredibly rewarding. Through all this I have noticed how hard it can be to sit still through feelings of discomfort. You know, that pit in your stomach, the itch in your mind that says “Exit stage left IMMEDIATELY!” That flutter in your heart that expresses your body’s fear response kicking in. Not knowing how to act, respond, think or speak. Have you ever felt this? Well I have been looking that dread monster, Fear and Discomfort, straight in the eyes and I am learning a lot by doing so.

One of the great lessons I have learned is that experiencing Fear and Discomfort can be fertile ground for profound personal growth. Our conditioning and our ingrained habits can become manifest when we hit this wall. I won’t try to tell you how to overcome your own fears. We are all different, with different anxieties, worries, strengths and weaknesses…but what I would love to share is that the perception of this experience can shift from “Danger” to “Opportunity.” When this state is reached…Stop, take a step back, take a deep breath and PAY ATTENTION. When we take a moment to think and process, new ideas and ways of problem solving come into view. We find the razor’s edge between reaction and action, the point between shrinking in fear and lashing out in aggression.

When discomfort strikes, May you find that space where it’s ok to be uncomfortable, calm and at peace. Much can be resolved when we maintain our center and act from this balanced place.

    Stressed? Try a Forest Bath... A factor I regularly see hindering a patient’s progress in physical therapy is stress. Stress contributes to low energy, digestive issues, poor immunity, hormonal imbalance, weight gain, chronic pain, muscle tension, and anxiety - along with being a root cause of nearly every disease. One surefire way to improve your overall health and well-being is to reduce the stress in your life. In today’s fast paced world, we’re bombarded daily with stressors: lack of sleep, commuter traffic, over-caffeination, unhappy relationships, financial obligations, screens, noise and light pollution, and environmental toxins such as mold, smog, and plastics… the list goes on. While the best way to address these factors might be moving to a wooded cabin off the grid, that’s not possible for most. So it’s vital to find ways to combat stress regularly which fit into your life, and one of the fastest (and cheapest) ways to do that is forest bathing. The Japanese call this shinrin-yoku, the practice of walking or sitting among trees for stress relief. A study on the psychological effects of forest bathing surveyed 498 healthy volunteers, twice in a forest and twice in control environments. The subjects showed significantly reduced hostility and depression scores, along with increased liveliness, after exposure to trees. Forest bathing is proven to lower blood pressure and heart rate, reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system by increasing killer T cell production, and promote feelings of wellbeing. This is due to essential oils call phytoncides emitted by trees and plants to protect themselves from insects and germs. It’s been found that inhaling phytoncides actually bolsters immune function and reduces stress in humans. Studies are proving it: “Forest environments promote lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, lower blood pressure, greater parasympathetic nerve activity, and lower sympathetic nerve activity than do city environments.” Many folks sit for 8 hour days in artificially lit offices, followed by fighting traffic on a commute. Once home, they plug into to various devices while continuing sitting on the couch, which has been shown to further increase cortisol (stress hormone) levels. The lack of activity and increased screen time contribute to poor sleep quality, which causes exhaustion and stress the following day. It’s a vicious cycle, only furthered by the fact that many of us don’t experience nature or greenery on a daily basis. We’re learning that daily contact with trees, plants, and grass helps rebalance our sympathetic (“fight or flight”) and parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous systems. Too much sympathetic nervous system activation reduces the length of our telomeres (caps at the end of our chromosomes), causing us to degenerate and age faster. This lack of connection to nature can be a major barrier to regaining health and wellness. It affects our circadian rhythms (sleep/wake cycle), reducing our ability to rest, recover, and respond to stress. There’s evidence that even just one weekend of camping resets our body clock and natural sleep rhythms. To experience the myriad benefits of contact with nature, we know it takes regular exposure. A new study confirms that positive brain changes occur with walking ninety minutes among trees. A part of the human brain, called the subgenual prefrontal cortex, is known as the center for brooding (defined as morbid rumination) - and walking in nature quiets this part of the brain. It’s well-documented that city dwellers with little access to greenery have more psychological problems: anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and brooding. So how do you incorporate forest bathing into your life? Luckily for Missoulians, forests and greenery abound! Some favorite local places include the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area, Pattee Canyon, Rock Creek, and Lubrecht Experimental Forest. Ideally, find some quiet, dense woods to spend time in - but even a park or tree-lined trail will do. Sit quietly, stroll, meditate, breathe, soak it in. Take your shoes off and stand on the grass (a practice known as earthing). When spring rolls around, take advantage of Missoula’s forested disc golf courses. There’s no right or wrong way to be in nature, just try not to look at your phone!
